An Analysis of the Classifiers “HON”（本）and “TIAO”（条）which Count Elongated Objects in Japanese and Chinese : Exploring Different Ways of Usage in both Languages
The classifier that counts elongated objects in Japanese is “HON（本）, and “TIAO（条）” in Chinese. In this article, we examine how the membership of the target category of these classifiers is extended from those of the core to the peripheral. As a result, it is considered that the characteristics of the core members are different in some respects. For example, one of the features of “HON” is that it is adopted for slender objects and also for things which have a limited length. However, unlike Japanese, the characteristic of "TIAO" is that it is applied to things which are prominent in length but also flexible in width. Furthermore, while the processes of these two classifiers are similar, “HON” is extended to include invisible things, whereas “TIAO” never leaves the physical aspect of elongated images behind. Although these two classifiers share common features which identify elongated objects, their category memberships are different in some crucial points and consequently, have different usages.
