The environment of online surveys is changing rapidly due to an increase of smartphone users. However, features of the smartphone as a questionnaire response terminal device and the characteristics of research panels, including smartphone users, have not been studied. Results from the first study indicated that the screen size of smartphones affected the answer data, and improving the questionnaire design could eliminate this effect. The second study indicated that a research panel, including smartphone users, has similar characteristics to Employment Status Survey in official statistics. These two results suggest the possibility of using online surveys for public opinion polls.
