This type of detonation is known as \"film detonation\" and is classified as a heterogeneous detonation. The structure of a heterogeneous detonation wave is very complex because physical processes such as momentum, heat and mass exchanges between liquid film and the gas phase are coupled with a chemical reaction. Experiments are conducted to investigate the initiation process of film detonation using high-speed schlieren photography and direct photography.
