They are rich (usually >90%) in carbohydrates, which contain a high proportion of galactose and L-arabinose residues, and may also contain smaller amounts of auxiliary sugars such as glucuronic acid, 4-O-methyl-glucuronic acid, and L-fucose. The carbohydrate moieties of AGPs have been recognized to be biological regulatory polymers functioning in various aspects of plant growth and development, such as cell division, programmed cell death, and embryogenesis. The carbohydrate moieties have very complex structures.
