When C_O/Al_2O_3 was prepared from C_O(NO3)2, and Cl-free, activity and selectivity to form unsaturated alcohol was low. Addition of C_OCl_2 in the reaction mixture promoted the selective hydrogenation remarkably. Concentration of Cl in the liquid phase was determined, as well as the amount of adsorbed Cl. A clear relation was found between the C=O hydrogenation activity and the amount of adsorbed Cl. When C_O/Al_2O_3 was prepared from C_oCl_2, Cl remained in the catalyst even after reduction treatment. This catalyst suggested both high activity and selectivity toward unsaturated alcohol formation.
