The photoluminescence spectrum of the glycocluster showed extremely strong emission at 475 nm and the absolute quantum yield was estimated to be 92% in water. The emission intensity was decreased by increasing the amount of peanut agglutinin (PNA), lactose-binding lectin, eventually to be nearly one-twentieth of the intensity in the case of absence of PNA. The fluorescence quenching of the glycocluster on mixing with PNA can be easily distinguished with the naked-eye observation under UV irradiation.
