In this paper, the items of China’s balance of payments accounts (goods and services, current account, capital and financial account, and change in reserve assets) are analyzed for the years 1982-1999. Tendencies of change in these items are shown, and the interrelation between the items is examined. In addition, it is shown that China’s large balance of current account eases damage from the Asian financial crisis. It is chiefly the balance of capital and financial account, it is also shown, that causes the change in reserve assets.
