Her father was confined to Hoshizuka-Keiaien, a Hansen's disease sanatorium in Kagoshima prefecture, when she was quite young. Her mother had to take care of her children by farming. Ms. A herself was sent to Keiaien in January 1956 when she was in sixth grade. She attended the Niirada branch of Oku High School, which was built as a special school for Hansen's disease patients in Nagashima-Aiseien, a Hansen's disease sanatorium in Okayama prefecture.\nAfter graduating, she worked at a research institute in Osaka University but had to quit after only one year to return to Keiaien because she received a letter from the doctor informing her that her father in Keiaien had cancer and needed her help. She found that her home was not a good place to live when she experienced negative attitudes from her relatives towards the history of her illness during her father's funeral, so she re-entered Suruga-Ryōyōjo, another sanatorium in Shizuoka prefecture, because she felt that there was nowhere else to go. When she was 23 years old, she became married to a man who had also attended the Niirada branch of Oku High School and had also been released from Nagashima-Aiseien. She then began her married life in Shizuoka. Though she had hidden the fact that she was an ex-patient of Hansen's disease, she still experienced much social injustice.\nWhen she became pregnant with her first baby, she was coerced to abort her child because her husband and mother-in-law were worried about the potential of transmitting Hansen's disease to the baby. She became pregnant a second time and decided to give birth to her child. However, she could not help but worry about how the disease might affect her own health and the future of her child, so she consulted her doctor. The doctor then reported this to Suruga-Ryōyōjo, so she changed hospitals and gave birth to a girl. The delivery was difficult, however, and the doctor made a mistake during the vacuum-assisted delivery. As a result the baby was born deaf. Several years later, Ms. A also gave birth to two boys.\nA little before the beginning of the lawsuit for the unconstitutionality of the Segregation Policy, she came back to her hometown alone to take care of her aging mother and confessed her history of Hansen's disease to a select group of close family and acquaintances, including her children.\nThis interview was conducted on September 25th, 2012 at Hoshizukasō, the lodge for visitors in Hoshizuka-Keiaien. Ms. A was 69 at the time of the interview. The interviewers were Yasunori Fukuoka, Ai Kurosaka, Kaori Adachi, and Minami Toyoda. Ms. A said the interview was the first time she confessed her whole life story to other individuals.
