In order to test this hypothesis, we examined one hundred books. In 1987, among 5 libraries examined, these books were the most popular among children. We analysed the contents of these books, focusing on the sex roles assigned to characters.\nIn general, both male and female characters were frequently assigned traditional sex roles, or had male-centric interpersonal relationships. The main results are as follows.\n1) Most frequently, the characters are animals which act like persons.\n2) Most of the leading characters are male.\n3) Most male adults are workers, and most female adults are housewives.\n4) In all the scenes, boys are playing outdoors.
