Faculty of Education}, month = {}, note = {During the academic year 2007, Uda and an English conversation school jointly carried out a research about how to improve English proficiency of Japanese learners. Uda introduced into one of her classes, the textbook, method and instructors of the English conversation school, Uda accumulated classroom data and gathered opinions about the class through two semesters. Based on the data, opinions and Uda's observations on the students, Uda came to a conclusion as below. The conclusion also serves as proposals to improve English proficiency of Japanese learners. (1) Textbook should meet the students' needs. (2) 4-step learning method is effective. (3) Class attendance greatly helps development. (4) Students should be motivated by efficient teachers. (5) To handwrite English improves English skills overall, (6) Social environment is a crucial key for learning English. In this joint research, Saitama University and the English conversation school worked tightly together: each offered its resources to the other; each supplemented the other with its merits; and each learned from the other.
