In Study A, 328 licensed instructors and school nurses working in 164 public elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools in an unnamed city were administered an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire in December 2012. Of the 101 respondents, 30.7% had encountered students struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity and 17.8% respondents had offered their support. Many of the students the respondents had supported were junior high school students, and many were boys. These students were concerned about things such as their friendships, attire and school uniforms, and romance. The respondents cited situations of bullying, depression, skipping school, and suicidal behavior. In addition, many respondents expressed the desire to learn how to support students struggling with their sexual orientation and gender identity. In Study B, from January to March 2013, 8 licensed instructors and 10 school nurses working in public elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools across two prefectures were interviewed using a semi-structured interview method. These participants had supported students struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity. A qualitative, inductive content analysis was performed. The interviews resulted in 16 case examples. Study B found that licensed instructors support students in the following ways: 【I. Grasp the individual’s circumstances】【II. Cooperate with school officials to support the individual】【III. Offer support based on the situation of the individual’s school life】【IV. Understand the individual’s thoughts and feelings】【V. Support the individual based on their parents’ understanding】【VI. Recognize the need to increase support for the individual】【VII. Cooperate with officials outside the school to support the individual】. In addition, it was found that school nurses support students in the following ways: 【I. Grasp the individual’s circumstances】【II. Cooperate with school officials to support the individual】【III. Understand the individual’s thoughts and feelings】【IV. Offer support based on the situation of the individual’s school life】【V. Cooperate with parents and officials outside the school to support the individual】【VI. Recognize the need to increase support for the individual】.
