Faculty of Education}, month = {}, note = {The purpose of this paper is to investigate work and life of craftsperson in a traditional Japanese craft industry. We interviewed seven craftspersons and four trainees of Ogawa Washi which is a kind of traditional Japanese paper. The number of washi factory drastically decreased in 1960’ under the change of lifestyle. Seventeen craftspersons belong Ogawa Washi Industry Co-op. Some craftspersons run their own factory respectively. The others are employed as workshop advisors at experience-based learning facilities. The chance to be a craftsperson are various, such as father’s work, moving to Ogawa, being concerned with washi. The ages to start these carrier are various. Some started in their 40s. They recognize they continue to work and improve their skills for the rest of their lives. Self-employed craftspersons work almost regularly. Their income from washi production is not enough to make a living and most of them live with their family. To enhance of sustainability of washi industry, new demands to washi must be developed to raise craftspersons’ income. Some craftsperson are conscious of traditional technique and the culture of washi.
