Over half the polls conducted at election times showed that students had difficulty establishing a position or maintaining their interest in politics. Three out of four students considered voting to be a duty or obligation. However, over half felt a sense of powerlessness, believing that government politics and policies were difficult to change and that the sovereign had no real power to do so. Political party awareness was highest for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), exceeding 80%; political support and voting behavior were also stronger for the LDP than any other political party.
