Faculty of Education}, month = {}, note = {The present study clarifies the characteristics of childcare support provided by nursery teachers using assessment items based on self-determination theory with a view to develop an assessment tool for childcare support of mothers. The initial assessment showed that nursery teachers considered the level of satisfaction of mothers’ needs with regard to competence, relationships, and autonomy in childcare, as well as the challenges associated with childcare support accordingly. Eight categories were identified in regard to the characteristics of support provided by nursery teachers using self-determination theory, namely, “supporting a sense of competence in childcare,” “building a relationship between the nursery teacher and parent/guardian,” “building a family relationship,” “building a parenting network,” “building relationships among parents/guardians,” “sharing parenting knowledge and techniques,” “respecting the view of parental role,” and “respecting the view of children.” The study also confirmed the characteristics of support for mothers who were not receptive to advice from nursery teachers and the characteristics of competence support or autonomy support for mothers' childcare by nursery teachers. By using the present assessment tool within a stable relationship with nursery teacher, it may be possible to satisfy and promote competence and autonomy, thereby building autonomous motivation.
