Faculty of Education}, month = {}, note = {The purpose of this study is to develop a teaching method to make students become freely operate “Items for Thinking (IT)” during the process of science activities that are mediated by language, and to test effectiveness of the method. We identified twelve IT as thinking strategies in science, which elementary students are expected to acquire, and developed a teaching method in which the IT are given as knowledges by teacher and students make use of them repeatedly during the process of science activities. We tested the method in one science unit of each grade from 3 to 6 at an elementary school. As the results, the number of types of IT used by students and the score of how to use IT increased statistically significant, compared to those in pre-test.
