The results of regression analysis suggest that a 1% increase in nominal wages would result in a roughly 1.1% increase in real GDP. From these findings it was surmised that Japanese people see wage levels and the employment environment―the precondition for wages―as key factors in assessing the economy. Analyses of the Public Opinion Survey on the Life of the People and the Labour Force Survey revealed that, as the total unemployment rate declines and employment stabilizes, people prepare for the future by either saving or investing in accordance with their projections for the future. As such, consumption may not increase significantly even when wages rise. Indeed, despite an increase in the disposable income of workers' households in 2019, average propensity to consume declined. However, detailed analysis indicates that workers' households made significant expenditures beyond their disposable income.
